Living a Quiet Life
A Call for St. John’s Presbyterian Church
By The Rev. Dr Jon Burnham, St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Houston, Texas
In Houston’s hustle, a “quiet life” sounds impossible. Yet 1 Thessalonians 4:11 urges us to “make it your ambition to lead a quiet life.” At St. John’s Presbyterian Church, we’re redefining ambition—not chasing applause, but seeking peace in Christ.
This quiet isn’t withdrawal; it’s deep engagement. Jesus balanced ministry with solitude, drawing strength from silent prayer (Luke 5:16). In our noisy vocations or lively homes, small moments—pausing before work, praying while folding laundry—anchor us in God’s calm.
Try This: Daily Examen
Each evening, spend 5–10 minutes in silence:
- Recall your day with gratitude.
- Notice moments of joy or struggle.
- Confess regrets and release burdens.
- Pray for tomorrow’s grace.
At St. John’s, let’s live quietly, serving Houston with steady faith and peace that draws others to Christ.
