A Message for St. John’s Presbyterian Church
By The Rev. Dr Jon Burnham, St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Houston, Texas
Life in Houston can feel like a wilderness—busy, draining, or even empty. Yet Hosea 2:14 reveals God’s promise: “I will lead her into the wilderness and speak tenderly to her.” At St. John’s Presbyterian Church, we’re learning that the desert isn’t punishment—it’s where God meets us.
When prayer feels dry or God seems distant, don’t despair. The wilderness is God’s classroom. Moses found Him in a burning bush (Exodus 3:1–4); Elijah heard His whisper (1 Kings 19:12). In barren moments, God speaks softly, teaching us to trust His daily provision, like manna for Israel.
Try This: Contemplative Journaling
Set aside 15 minutes in a quiet Houston spot—maybe a park or your home. Pray, “Lord, I’m here. Help me listen.” Write your thoughts, even doubts, without judgment. Over time, you’ll see God’s tender voice in your words.
The desert shapes us for what’s next. At St. John’s, let’s embrace these seasons, trusting God’s love is enough.
Prayer
Lord, guide us at St. John’s through the wilderness. Speak tenderly, and teach us to hear You. Amen.
