🌿 Invitation to Worship — Sixth Sunday of Easter 🌿

🌿 Invitation to Worship — Sixth Sunday of Easter 🌿

From Pastor Jon Burnham,
St. John’s Presbyterian Church

Dear Friends,

This Sunday, we gather in the bright wake of Easter joy, carried not by force, but by love’s gentle pull.

Come and listen for the river that runs beneath your life. Come and rise with the hawk who rides the hidden wind. Come and be warmed by the light that cannot be resisted.

Our service will open with the soaring beauty of Morning Has Broken, and we will pray, confess, sing, and proclaim that the Spirit of Christ draws us not with fear, but with delight. In the sermon, Drawn by Love: Understanding Irresistible Grace, we’ll explore what it means to be pursued by God’s mercy—not dragged, but awakened.

We’ll reflect on Psalm 40’s powerful image: being lifted from the pit, steadied on the rock. Then, we’ll turn to John’s Gospel, where Jesus speaks of being the bread from heaven, promising that those drawn by the Father will never be cast out.

Let this be a Sunday where your heart is stirred, your voice lifted, and your spirit renewed.

Come be part of the song.
Come be part of the grace.
Come, and let love draw you home.

With you in the Spirit’s rising wind,

Pastor Jon

*Call To Worship, The Rev. Dr. Jon Burnham

Pastor: The river moves unseen beneath the soil,
calling seeds to awaken.
People: So God’s Spirit moves within us,
drawing our hearts to life.
Pastor: The hawk circles high on unseen currents of air.
People: We rise on the wings of grace
we cannot resist.
Pastor: The morning sun spills gold across the hills,
warming the hidden valleys.
People: We are drawn by the light,
gathered by the love of Christ!

Opening Prayer

*Morning Has Broken, Hymn 664

1 Morning has broken like the first morning;
blackbird has spoken like the first bird.
Praise for the singing! Praise for the morning!
Praise for them, springing fresh from the Word!

2 Sweet the rain's new fall sunlit from heaven,
like the first dewfall on the first grass.
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden,
sprung in completeness where God's feet pass.

3 Mine is the sunlight! Mine is the morning,
born of the one light Eden saw play!
Praise with elation; praise every morning,
God's re-creation of the new day!

Prayer of Confession Glen Risley, Liturgist
Gracious God, We confess we have resisted Your love and closed our ears to Your voice. We have clung to the shadows, even when You offered the light. Forgive us. Draw us again with cords of compassion. Turn our hearts of stone into hearts of flesh, and teach us to follow where You lead. Amen. (Silent Confession)

Assurance of Pardon

The Word

Prayer for Illumination

First Scripture Reading; Psalm 40

 I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. Happy are those who make the Lord their trust, who do not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after false gods.
You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you. Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be counted. Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.
Then I said, “Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord. I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness from the great congregation.
Do not, O Lord, withhold your mercy from me; let your steadfast love and your faithfulness keep me safe forever. For evils have encompassed me without number; my iniquities have overtaken me, until I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me. Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me; O Lord, make haste to help me. Let all those be put to shame and confusion who seek to snatch away my life; let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who desire my hurt. Let those be appalled because of their shame who say to me, “Aha, Aha!”
But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!” As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God.

Anthem

Sermon and Scripture, John 6:37–44

Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.”
Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven?’” Jesus answered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day.

The Word of the Lord for us today.
Thanks be to God.

Sermon
Drawn by Love: Understanding Irresistible Grace
The Rev. Dr. Jon Burnham

*Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, 1, 3 and 4, Hymn 366

1 Love divine, all loves excelling,
Joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling;
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion;
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation;
enter every trembling heart.

3 Come, Almighty, to deliver;
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

4 Finish then thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee:
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.

*O Beautiful for Spacious Skies, Hymn 338

1 O beautiful for spacious skies,
for amber waves of grain,
for purple mountain majesties
above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
and crown thy good with brotherhood
from sea to shining sea!

2 O beautiful for heroes proved
in liberating strife,
who more than self their country loved,
and mercy more than life!
America! America!
God mend thine every flaw;
confirm thy soul in self-control,
thy liberty in law!

3 O beautiful for patriot dream
that sees beyond the years
thine alabaster cities gleam,
undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
till all success be nobleness
and every gain divine!

This series invites us to wrestle honestly with hardship, hold fast to trust, and find comfort in the unshakable goodness of God.

"Kingdom Stewardship: Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount," October through November. We explore how Jesus' teachings guide us in stewarding all aspects of our lives—our blessings, influence, resources, relationships, and faith. By aligning ourselves with kingdom principles, we become effective stewards who advance God's purposes on earth.

“The Word Made Flesh: Advent Reflections from the Gospel of John.” Anticipating the celebration of Jesus' birth, we reflect on the abundant grace we receive through Him. This sermon series encourages us to live in the reality of God's grace, allowing it to transform us and inspire gratitude and praise.

School Supplies Fundraiser for our PCHAS Single Families. Imagine how challenging it is to keep kids thriving in school, particularly when you are a single parent. Our PCHAS families do an amazing job of keeping lots of balls in the air. By taking on funding the purchase of annual school supplies, we at St John's make their balancing act a bit more manageable. Our goal is to raise money to cover all the school supply needs for the kids living on our campus for the 2025/2026 school year.
The PCHAS team will need the funds by mid-June, to allow them time to get shopping completed prior to the next school year. The Faith in Action committee, aided by our Sunday School kids, will be collecting your donations over the next few weeks. In addition to checks and cash donations, you can contribute using the church Zelle account (accounts@stjohnspresby.org), adding a note indicating this is for "PCHAS School Supplies." Thanks for all you do to fulfill our mission to "Glorify God by Making Disciples and Meeting Human Needs." The Faith in Action Committee

June 4, 2025   Living the Lord’s Prayer Summer Sermon Series at St. John’s Presbyterian Church This summer, we invite you to journey more deeply into one of the most familiar and beloved parts of our faith: the Lord’s Prayer. Each Sunday from Pentecost through the end of August, we will pause on a single phrase from the prayer Jesus taught us—not merely to recite it, but to live it. Together, we will explore how these holy words shape our trust in God, our relationships with others, and our hope for the world. Each line of the Lord’s Prayer is a doorway into transformation. From “Our Father in heaven” to “Amen,” these phrases invite us to surrender control, embrace forgiveness, cultivate daily trust, and long for a world where God’s will is done on earth as in heaven. Through Scripture, worship, and shared reflection, we’ll discover that this prayer is not only something we say—but something we become. As we walk through this series together, may these ancient words take root in new ways. May we speak them with reverence, pray them with honesty, and live them with courage. Whether you are new to the faith or have said these words since childhood, may this season open you to the Spirit’s gentle guidance and form you into a living prayer for the world. With hope and joy, Pastor Jon P.S. Remember to wear red for Pentecost this Sunday.     Celebrating Our 2025 Confirmands This Sunday in Worship This Sunday, we give thanks to God as we joyfully recognize our 2025 class of Confirmands during worship. These young people have spent the past several months exploring their faith, learning the core teachings of the Church, asking deep questions, and growing in community. Now they stand ready to affirm their baptismal vows and be received as full members of St. John’s Presbyterian Church. Their presence reminds us all of the sacred journey of faith and the importance of nurturing that journey in every generation. Join us as we celebrate their commitment, bless their continued walk with Christ, and surround them with the love and prayers of our congregation. Come ready to welcome them with open hearts!   Pentecost Offering – If We All Do a Little, It Adds Up to A Lot! Last year St. John’s gave $660 to this special offering taken on Pentecost Sunday. It helps immigrant children flourish, supports young adult volunteers, and supports ministries with youth. Let’s continue to give generously this year. Envelopes are at the back of the Sanctuary.   Hurricane Season Preparation Suggestions The 2025 hurricane season in Houston, Texas, runs from June 1 to November 30, consistent with the Atlantic hurricane season. The peak period for hurricane activity, when storms are most likely to form and make landfall, is typically from August through October, with the highest probability around Labor Day in early September. Take the time now to protect your family, home and business. Let this official kickoff serve as a reminder to prepare now, before the height of hurricane season here in Texas. Here are some tips to get you started: Create or update an emergency kit to ensure you’re stocked up on essentials like nonperishable food, water, medical supplies, flashlights and radios. Be sure to customize your kit to fit your family’s personal needs. Develop or refresh a communication plan with your family. This will ensure everyone is informed, on the same page and operating in a way that maximizes their safety. This includes sharing emergency contact info, including an out-of-state contact and enabling your phone’s emergency alerts. Protect vital documents so you can easily identify yourself, submit insurance claims and request assistance. Important files, including personal, financial and legal documents, should be saved in a waterproof, fireproof bag and backed up digitally. Know how to shut off water, gas and electricity in case of an emergency. Invest in backup power. Backup energy solutions can help you ride out the storm, including portable options or whole-home generators like the one Eric and Matt have. Check out more preparedness tips and recovery resources at The Reliant Storm Center: reliantstormcenter.com.   Support PCHAS School Supply Drive We’re collecting donations to support Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services (PCHAS) in providing school supplies to children in need. You can give by: Cash Check (payable to St. John’s Presbyterian with “For PCHAS school supplies” in the memo) Zelle (to St. John’s Presbyterian, include “For PCHAS school supplies” in the memo) 📅 In-person collections will take place after worship on June 1, 8, and 15. Let’s come together to equip students with the tools they need to thrive! The Faith in Action Committee   Men's Fellowship Wednesday, June 11 at 6:30pm in Session Room We will have a Men’s Fellowship Meeting at 6:30 on Wednesday, June 11, in the Session Room. All men of the church are welcome to participate as we plan upcoming projects.     ~ Sermon Series Starts on Pentecost Sunday, June 8 ~ What to expect each week June 8 (Day of Pentecost) Our Father in Heaven – Matthew 6:9 & Psalm 105 We approach God with childlike intimacy and holy reverence. Invite your friends, neighbors, study partners. Let’s journey through the Lord's Prayer—one sermon at a time, one step closer to the heart of our Savior.       From the Desk of Dan Herron The Curious Case of the Peanut Cookie I recently picked up a package of peanut cookies from the local grocery store. The label was a marvel of modern marketing—gluten free, grain free, low sugar, keto friendly. It promised the world and then some: non-GMO, no hydrogenated oils, no trans fats, low carb, vegan, allergy friendly, additive free, nightshade free, soy free, dairy and egg free, no artificial colors or flavors, rice free, and kosher. It seemed less like a cookie and more like a theological statement. With high hopes, I opened the package. And there they were. Three peanuts. That was it. Three pristine, unadorned peanuts in a vacuum of culinary possibility. Were they technically cookies? According to the packaging, yes. According to my taste buds, no. But here’s the twist—those three peanuts were delicious. Peanuts are humble, but surprisingly complex. They’re packed with fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. If you’re curious (or skeptical), check out their nutritional profile on Wikipedia. You might be surprised by what these little legumes bring to the table. Sometimes we seek what’s new, improved, and thoroughly processed—only to rediscover the goodness of something simple. Maybe that’s not a bad reminder for our spiritual lives too. — Dan Herron     With hearts united in hope, we lift these names into the healing presence of God. May 28, 2025 Ascension Sunday Reflection As we conclude our TULIP sermon series on this Ascension Sunday, we find deep solace in this final promise: “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians 1:6). What a glorious assurance this is—that our perseverance is not rooted in our limited strength, but in God’s unfailing grip upon us. We are kept by God's mercy, sustained by God's grace, and sheltered under the watchful eye of the One who neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121). The journey of faith is not a solitary climb, but a Spirit-led pilgrimage, where we are carried as much as we walk. This truth is especially precious as we mark Christ’s ascension into heaven—not as an absence, but as the beginning of His continual intercession for us. The risen Lord has not left us alone; He reigns with purpose and power, keeping His saints by the Spirit He has poured out. When we grow weary, He strengthens us. When we stray, He gently calls us back. When we fear we’ve lost our way, He reminds us: “The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24). Our assurance doesn’t lie in our grip on God, but in God’s grip on us. As we turn our faces toward the next season, let us walk in boldness, not because we are unshakable, but because the One who holds us is. Let our hearts be lifted with Christ into the reality of heaven—where our life is hidden with God, where prayers are heard, and where hope is anchored. May we live as those kept by grace, growing not only in faith, but also in the fruit of that faith: love, peace, endurance, and joyful confidence. The good work has begun. And it will be completed. Amen. With hope and joy, Pastor Jon     Brunch This Sunday — JUNE 1, after Worship! These are very convenient. The motion sensing switches can turn lights on automatically when you enter a room and off after you leave, enhancing convenience and energy efficiency. Someone has placed a small sticker which says OFF on these switches. So now when you leave the room you can save electricity by pressing the OFF sticker. This causes immediate darkness. So too be safe, open the door, enjoy the light from the hallway, and then press OFF. You get darkness and an immediate a savings of electricity! If someone else is in the dark room, they will likely let you know! So, if you turn the lights OFF you can turn them back ON by pressing the OFF button again. Try out this new OFF idea to save electricity. If you do not press OFF, then after a few minutes the lights will automatically go off because of the new switch. That’s the way these switches work.     ~ New Sermon Series Starts on Pentecost Sunday, June 8 ~ What to expect each week June 8 (Day of Pentecost) Our Father in Heaven – Matthew 6:9 & Psalm 105 We approach God with childlike intimacy and holy reverence. May 21, 2025   Coming Up This Sunday: TULIP Series, Week 4: Irresistible Grace This Sunday, we continue our journey through the TULIP series with a message that invites us to stand in awe before the unrelenting love of God. The sermon, Drawn by Love: Understanding Irresistible Grace, will take us deep into Jesus’ promise in John 6:37–44: “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them.” We will also hear the resonant words of Psalm 40, “He drew me up from the pit, out of the miry bog.” What does it mean to be drawn—not forced, not coerced—but wooed by the very heart of God? In a world where love is often conditional and fleeting, this Sunday’s message reminds us that divine grace is not a transaction but a transformation. Irresistible grace is the sovereign act of God’s Spirit reaching into the resistant heart and making it willing, eager, and joyful to say yes to Christ. It is love that does not give up, grace that does not retreat. As we gather, we’ll reflect on how God’s grace gently breaks down our defenses—not with violence, but with tenderness. This is not the grace that drags us against our will but the grace that opens our eyes, awakens our souls, and makes our hearts burn within us. Come and be reminded that even when we stumble, grace is not daunted. Come and be renewed by the love that seeks, calls, and restores. ✝️ Let us gather at the Cross of the One who draws us still. 🕯️ Let us worship the God whose love never fails. 🎶 Let us sing of grace that goes before, behind, and within. Come, beloved of God. You are being drawn. With hope and joy, Pastor Jon   Brunch This Sunday — May 25, after worship! Join us after worship for a delicious brunch hosted by the Worship Committee. After flooding of Salem Lutheran in 2017, Keenagers began meeting at St. John’s. Under the wonderful leadership of Carole Knaub for the past 17 years, many potlucks with entertainment and bus trips were enjoyed. A big THANK YOU to Carole for all those years. However, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, ideas are being bounced around to start a new organization much like Keenagers. Stay tuned for the rest of the story! THE EPISTLE St. John's Presbyterian Church Houston, Texas April 30, 2025 What Presbyterians Believe — A Journey Through TULIP Starts this Sunday! This Eastertide at St. John’s, we are diving deep into the heart of Reformed theology with a sermon series titled TULIP: What Presbyterians Believe. Over five Sundays, we are exploring the historic doctrines of grace—Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints—not as cold concepts, but as living truths that draw us closer to the heartbeat of God. These messages aren’t meant to shame or discourage us. Instead, they aim to give us a holy perspective on our salvation—a divine lens through which we see God’s initiative, God’s power, and God’s unshakeable love. Each week offers a different glimpse into God’s work in our lives. We begin by acknowledging our need for a Savior. Total Depravity doesn’t mean we’re worthless—it means we’re honest about our deep need for God’s mercy. From there, we are reminded that God’s love is not dependent on our effort or performance. Unconditional Election reveals a God who chooses us in love, not based on merit, but from God's eternal purpose and joy. Midway through the series, we’ll meditate on Christ’s purposeful death. Limited Atonement may sound narrow, but it’s deeply comforting—it means Christ’s sacrifice was not vague or general, but intentional and personal. Irresistible Grace then pulls us toward a God who doesn’t coerce but woos us with gentleness and power. It is God’s love that softens our hearts and draws us home. We conclude on Ascension Sunday with Perseverance of the Saints, proclaiming that the same God who begins a good work in us will be faithful to complete it. We do not walk alone—God keeps us. This series is a call to worship. Not fear-based obedience, but joy-filled awe. Each doctrine is a window into God’s character: holy, sovereign, and extravagantly gracious. Whether these ideas are familiar or new, our prayer is that they deepen your trust, expand your hope, and kindle your gratitude. May your heart be drawn not into pride or despair—but into praise. Explore the details below to learn more about this sermon series and other inspiring series planned throughout the remainder of 2025. With peace and a grateful heart, Pastor Jon   Men's Group Wednesday, April 30 at 6:30pm in Session Room We will have a Men’s Group Meeting at 6:30 on Wednesday, April 30, in the Session Room. They meant a lot to me. There were so many who brought delicious food in copious amounts that was gobbled up. It was such a relief not to have to worry about feeding all of the people at my house at varying times. The pots and various containers are in the church kitchen. If you don’t find yours please let me know. I am overwhelmed by your generosity and support. I appreciate Jon’s wonderful message at Bobby’s service and his visits during Bobby’s last days. Thank you to Shirley Boyd for accompanying on the piano. I know it was a labor of love. Lastly, I am so grateful to everyone who helped with the reception and helped it run so smoothly. I want to especially thank Toren Hughes for playing the bagpipe at his grandfather’s service and William Hughes for preparing the playlist of his father’s favorites. Also thanks to Adam Maxon for the historical photo slides. I am truly blessed to be a part of such a loving and caring church family. Humbly, Mary Hughes   A Delightful Afternoon with PCHAS What a fantastic gathering we enjoyed at the recent PCHAS Luncheon held at Lakeside Country Club! The atmosphere was elegant, the company joyful, and the cause deeply meaningful. From the moment guests arrived—colorful parking cards on display and warm smiles on their faces—it was clear we were in for something special. The room radiated with joy and purpose as members and friends of St. John’s joined supporters from across the city to learn more about the vital mission of Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services. We are especially grateful to Shirley Boyd and Ann Hardy for serving as our gracious table hosts. Their hospitality helped make everyone feel welcome and cared for. Their leadership behind the scenes, coordinating details and offering warm greetings at every turn, played a vital role in the success of the afternoon. The photo included speaks volumes—faces shining, spirits lifted, and a true sense of shared purpose among all who attended. It was a reminder that when we come together in love and service, God’s work unfolds beautifully among us. Thank you to everyone who supported this event. Your presence and partnership help extend hope, healing, and opportunity to children and families across Texas. What a gift it is to be part of a church community that shows up with heart.   ~ STARTS THIS SUNDAY ~ TULIP: What Presbyterians Believe 5 Week Sermon Series Starts May 4, 2025 Why TULIP Matters: A Five‑Week Deep Dive into God’s Grace Over recent months, members have asked for a clear, compelling overview of Reformed theology. You spoke. I listened. Beginning Sunday, May 4, we will unpack TULIP—those five core doctrines that shape our understanding of God’s work in salvation. Why this series matters TULIP offers a concise summary of how God initiates, secures, and sustains our redemption. Each doctrine sheds light on our human need, God’s sovereign love, Christ’s effective sacrifice, the Spirit’s powerful call, and our lasting hope in Him. Exploring these truths side by side will deepen our worship, sharpen our gratitude, and reinforce our confidence in the gospel. People have been asking In the narthex, in small‑group gatherings, even during office visits—questions about grace and election keep bubbling up. “How does God choose?” “What does election mean for my daily life?” “Can I be certain of my salvation?” This series will provide solid answers, grounded in Scripture and delivered with Pastor Jon’s trademark clarity and warmth. What to expect each week May 4 (Third Sunday of Easter) Total Depravity – Ephesians 2:1–5 & Psalm 51 Our need for a Savior, alive only through God’s initiative. May 11 (Fourth Sunday of Easter) Unconditional Election – Ephesians 1:3–6 & Psalm 139 God’s choice grounded in love, not merit. Peace, Pastor Jon Burnham A Joyful Celebration for Tina and Steven What a beautiful afternoon we shared in McPhail Hall on Sunday, April 27, as we gathered after worship to celebrate Tina Liljedahl and Steven Jump! The wedding shower was filled with warmth, laughter, and heartfelt blessings for this beloved couple. Tables buzzed with conversation, the lunch was light but delicious, and the room was full of joy as family, friends, and church members came together to mark this exciting new chapter in Tina and Steven’s lives. We give our deepest thanks to everyone who helped make the celebration such a success—from those who prepared food and decorated the hall to those who welcomed guests and made the event feel so personal and festive. Your hospitality and love made all the difference. Thank you also to all who contributed kind words, prayers, and gifts—especially those who gave toward the honeymoon fund. Your generosity will travel with them as they begin their journey as husband and wife. We now look ahead with joy to Tina and Steven’s wedding on Saturday, May 10, in the sanctuary, with the reception to follow in McPhail Hall. May God bless them richly in their marriage, and may their life together be rooted in love, faith, and the grace that brought them here. 💕🎉   Living the Lord's Prayer sermon series starts on Pentecost Sunday Starting Pentecost on June 8 and running through August 31, Pastor Jon leads a 13‑week exploration of the Lord’s Prayer. This series was inspired by the recent Lord's Prayer teaching seminar led by the Christian Education Committee and taught by Bill Ehrenstrom. Each Sunday unpacks a phrase—from Our Father in Heaven to Amen—revealing intimacy, holiness, kingdom purpose, daily dependence, forgiveness, spiritual guidance, and doxology. Through scripture readings and heartfelt reflection, we’ll move from reciting words to living prayer in every aspect of our lives. Join us as we deepen trust, embrace God’s priorities, and become witnesses to his reign in the world. "Kingdom Stewardship: Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount" Throughout "Kingdom Stewardship: Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount," we explore how Jesus' teachings guide us in stewarding all aspects of our lives—our blessings, influence, resources, relationships, and faith. By aligning ourselves with kingdom principles, we become effective stewards who advance God's purposes on earth. This series challenges us to examine where our treasures lie, to seek God's kingdom above all else, and to build our lives on the solid foundation of Christ the King. This series thoughtfully incorporates significant dates such as All Saints' Day and Christ the King Sunday, aligning their themes with the overarching focus on stewardship. By pairing teachings from the Sermon on the Mount with complementary Old Testament passages, we gain a deeper understanding of God's call to live as faithful stewards in every area of our lives. Faith in the Storm: Lessons from the Book of Job This September, we journey through the Book of Job in a four-part sermon series that explores faith in the face of suffering. Beginning with Job’s profound loss, we witness his remarkable trust in God even amid devastation. As Job cries out during God’s silence, we are reminded of Christ’s invitation to boldly seek grace in our pain. From God’s thundering reply out of the whirlwind, we are humbled by divine mystery and called to surrender our need for answers. Finally, in Job’s restoration, we glimpse the faithfulness of God who redeems suffering and strengthens the weary. This series invites us to wrestle honestly with hardship, hold fast to trust, and find comfort in the unshakable goodness of God.   The Word Made Flesh: Advent Reflections from the Gospel of John Advent 2025 Sermon Series Anticipating the celebration of Jesus' birth, we reflect on the abundant grace we receive through Him. John emphasizes that from His fullness, we have all received grace upon grace. Psalm 98 calls us to sing a new song for the marvelous things God has done. This sermon series encourages us to live in the reality of God's grace, allowing it to transform us and inspire gratitude and praise. As we move into a new year, we are challenged to carry the message of God's grace into the world. This Advent series is designed to guide the congregation through a thoughtful and meaningful preparation for Christmas. Each week builds upon the previous, drawing us deeper into the mystery of the Word made flesh. By focusing on the themes of light, joy, preparation, and grace, we are encouraged to embrace the true meaning of Advent and Christmas, allowing these truths to impact our lives and relationships. The Epistle For April 16, 2025   Evangelism Expedition and Easter Blessings Last Saturday, our evangelism team from St. John's enjoyed a joyful morning at the One Hope Preschool egg hunt. It was a lively and heartwarming event filled with laughter, community spirit, and vibrant fellowship. A heartfelt thanks goes out to our dedicated volunteers Lynne, Shirley, Virginia, Leonie, and all others who shared their love and enthusiasm, making it a special day for the children and families of our community. That same afternoon, we gathered to honor and celebrate the life of our dear friend Bob Hughes with a meaningful and powerful memorial service. The Spirit moved deeply among those present, providing comfort and peace. Afterward, our community continued the fellowship with a delightful BBQ reception in McPhail Hall. Special thanks to Alvina and Libby, whose thoughtful hospitality made the gathering warm and inviting. Our continued prayers are with Mary and the rest of the Hughes family. Then we experienced an energetic and moving Palm Sunday worship service last Sunday. This included the children coming forward and leading us in waving palm branches, pictured above. We have now entered Holy Week, a sacred time in our Christian calendar. Join us this Thursday at St. John's Presbyterian Church for a profound evening of communion and tenebrae—experience the sacred mystery as we reflect deeply on Christ’s passion and sacrifice. Easter Sunday approaches, bringing with it the joyous proclamation of resurrection and new life. We warmly invite you, your family, and friends to join us this Sunday as we celebrate the glorious resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Come and experience the renewal and hope of Easter at St. John’s—where everyone is welcome! With peace and gratitude, Pastor Jon Burnham     A Morning of Joy, Seeds of Grace: Our Evangelism Visit to One Hope Preschool On a sun-drenched Saturday morning, the lawn behind One Hope Preschool burst into color and laughter. Pastel eggs dotted the grass like candy-colored constellations, and toddlers in Easter dresses and superhero T-shirts dashed across the yard with wide eyes and eager baskets. The air buzzed with life—parents crouching to snap photos, volunteers scattering eggs, and the joyful squeals of discovery. Into this beautiful chaos stepped our team from St. John’s—Lynne, Shirley, Virginia, Leonie, and others—bringing gentle presence and warm smiles. We weren’t pushy. We didn’t carry signs or make speeches. We mingled. We chatted. We offered bookmarks, small wooden crosses, and copies of our newsletter to anyone curious about our community. And many were. The families received us graciously. The staff at One Hope welcomed us with warmth. And while most were content to enjoy the moment, one family did express deeper interest—so we gave them a quiet tour of the sanctuary, where the Spirit whispers. No pressure. No agenda. Just presence. We left with sunshine on our shoulders and joy in our hearts. We felt, quite simply, that we had been exactly where we were supposed to be—living witnesses of grace, in the middle of a morning filled with giggles and glittering eggs.   Whispers of Grace book in email format   This week is Holy Week and you willl receive an email each day of Holy Week from the Whispers of Grace email series by Pastor Jon. This email series concludes on Easter Sunday. Our Tuesday Spiritual Study Group is now using this series as their weekly study guide. Come share in the love, laughter, and blessings as we shower this wonderful couple with our best wishes. Let’s gather as a church family to celebrate this special season in their lives. All are welcome! 💕🎉 Support One Great Hour of Sharing at St. John’s Presbyterian Church We will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering at St. John's on Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and the Sunday after Easter. In Isaiah 58, the prophet reminds us: “Your ancient ruins shall be rebuilt; you shall raise up the foundations of many generations; you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in” (Isaiah 58:12). Like the people of Israel returning from exile, we are called to look beyond ourselves. “Is not this the fast that I choose… to share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover them?” (Isaiah 58:6-7). When you give to the One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) at St. John’s, you join Presbyterians across the country in reaching out to those who are hurting, oppressed, and living on the margins. Through your generosity, lives are rebuilt, hope is restored, and the light of Christ shines brightly into places of deep need. You can explore the impact of your gifts by visiting the OGHS website (pcusa.org/oghsmap). See how our collective offering supports life-changing ministries around the globe and join in prayer for those whose lives are touched by our generosity. Together, we can make small, faithful changes that, added together, create profound transformation for our brothers and sisters in need.   PCHAS Luncheon Guest Invitations and Parking Information On Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, our table hosts, Ann and Shirley, will be distributing official invitation cards—or mailing them—to the 20 guests representing St. John’s at the April 24 PCHAS Luncheon. A Glorious Season of Sacred Beauty — The 2025 Lenten Arts Series at St. John’s Thank you to our Music Director, Mark Swindler, for producing the 2025 Lenten Arts Series at St. John's Presbyterian Church. This year’s Lenten Arts Series at St. John’s Presbyterian Church blossomed like springtime grace in the wilderness, offering the community four radiant Sundays of music that lifted hearts, stilled souls, and drew us all closer to the divine mystery of Lent. Each concert was not merely a performance—it was a prayer, an offering, a spiritual encounter. All who attended were deeply edified, and many new faces from our wider community joined us in these moments of beauty and reflection. March 16 – Monarch Chamber Players We began with the enchanting sounds of Allison Asthana (flute), Julian Hernandez (clarinet), and Kristiana Ignatjeva (cello), whose performance breathed life into the works of Beethoven, Mozart, Sohn, and De Falla. From the elegance of Beethoven's Trio Op. 87 to the mystic charm of De Falla's Homage, this concert was a gentle invitation into the mystery of Lent, where each note carried the promise of resurrection. March 23 – The Polish Duo Dominika Dancewicz (violin) and Alina Klimazewska (piano) delivered a deeply emotional program, "Elgar and Brahms, Echoes of a Lost World." With Elgar’s Violin Sonata in E Minor and Brahms’ Sonata in D Minor, the performance evoked a haunting beauty—music that grieved and hoped all at once. Max Richter’s Mercy brought us to stillness, like a whispered prayer at twilight. It was a sacred space where memory and longing found their voice. March 30 – James Palmer Piano Recital Pianist James Palmer guided us through an inspired recital of works that spanned centuries and spirits—from Di Lasso’s 1595 arrangement to Palmer’s own powerful arrangement of Verdi. Beethoven, Debussy, Chopin, and Sohn all found new life through his fingertips, reminding us of the eternal quality of the arts when offered in reverence and skill. It was a profound journey through joy, contemplation, and awe. April 6 – Trio Oriens and Mark Swindler Our final offering was an extraordinary culmination of collaboration and spirit. Tenor Mark Swindler was joined by I-Ling Chen (piano), Olive Chen (cello), Shih-Ting Huang (violin), and composer Skyler Baysa. Baysa’s "Dream of Spring Peonies" shimmered with hope, while Beethoven’s Adelaide and Piano Trio Op. 1, No. 1 stirred hearts with timeless elegance. The Debussy Piano Trio in G Major closed our series with a luminous flourish, like the dawn of Easter peeking just over the Lenten horizon. This series could not have been realized without the faithful and artistic leadership of Mark Swindler, Music Director, and Alina Klimazewska, Accompanist. Their vision and commitment created a holy garden where art and worship bloomed in harmony. We give thanks to all who shared their gifts and to all who attended. Truly, this season of sacred art was a foretaste of the beauty and glory of the Resurrection. Thanks be to God.   Easter Lilies for worship and take home Easter lilies for use in our Easter Sunday worship service are $12 a plant and you can take them home Easter Sunday. The Epistle for April 9, 2025 St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas Journey to the Cross: Discovering Jesus’ Life in Matthew It’s been an incredible blessing to walk through this sermon series on the life of Jesus with you all. Exploring Matthew’s Gospel, we’ve journeyed together from the fulfillment of ancient prophecies about the Messiah, through the humble birth of our King, and on to Jesus’ baptism and His victorious confrontation with temptation. Each week, I’m reminded of how Scripture comes alive when we see Jesus not only as the central figure in history, but also as the guiding light in our daily lives. A few Sundays ago, we dove into the teachings of the Sermon on the Mount, marveling at the wisdom of Christ’s words as He proclaimed what it means to live under God’s rule. Last Sunday, we saw His miracles of compassion as He healed the sick and comforted the weary. In the weeks ahead, we’ll explore the parables that reveal the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven, walk with Jesus during His triumphant yet humble entry into Jerusalem, and sit with Him at the Last Supper as He models servant leadership. And of course, we will rejoice together as we celebrate the victory of the resurrection—a victory that offers us hope and purpose even now. This series is inspired by my book Journey to the Cross: Reflections on Jesus’ Life in Matthew, which provides a deeper dive into these powerful stories and teachings. If you’re interested in going further into the Gospel of Matthew, you can find the book on Amazon. I encourage you to keep reflecting on these chapters throughout the week, as together we continue to grow in our understanding of Jesus’ life, ministry, and the ongoing work of His Spirit among us. With peace and gratitude, Pastor Jon Burnham     Next week is Holy Week and you will receive an email each day of Holy Week from the Whispers of Grace email series by Pastor Jon. This email series concludes on Easter Sunday. Our Tuesday Spiritual Study Group is now using this series as their weekly study guide. A Service of Witness to the Resurrection In Loving Memory of Bob Hughes This Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 PM Sanctuary of St. John’s Presbyterian Church Reception to follow in McPhail Hall “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7 On Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 PM, we will gather in the sanctuary of St. John’s to give thanks for the life of Bob Hughes—a beloved member of our church family. In this service of witness to the resurrection, we come together in sacred remembrance and quiet gratitude. A reception will follow in McPhail Hall, where we’ll share stories and laughter, continuing the fellowship that Bob cherished so deeply. During his retirement years, Bob became a quiet but constant presence in our church. He gave of himself with steady hands and a servant’s heart. Whether it was a light that flickered, an air conditioner gone quiet, or a computer acting up, Bob was already there—gently tending, faithfully fixing, always ready to help. His work was often unseen, but always deeply felt. Bob’s leadership didn’t come with a title—it came through humble service, integrity, and deep care. He made things work, not just mechanically, but spiritually—bringing a quiet strength to our community that we will miss profoundly. His presence was a gift. His life, a testimony to the beauty of faith lived out in simple, steady acts of love. As we remember Bob, we hold especially in prayer his beloved wife Mary, their children and grandchildren, and all who were touched by his kindness and grace. May they be comforted by the peace of Christ and upheld by the love of this congregation. Scripture reminds us that those who run the race with faith are welcomed home with joy. Bob has finished his race—faithful, humble, and true. He now rests in the eternal light and love of God, where every burden is lifted and every labor is honored. May we honor Bob’s memory by carrying forward his spirit—quietly showing up, lending a hand, and loving this church with the same quiet devotion he so beautifully embodied. His life continues to speak, reminding us that the smallest acts of service often leave the greatest legacy In Loving Memory of George Dobbin With tender hearts, we share the news of George Dobbin’s passing. A devoted member of St. John’s Presbyterian Church for many years, George died peacefully in Austin earlier this week. George quietly blessed our community with his wisdom, generosity, and steady faith. He served faithfully on the Finance Committee and thoughtfully tended to the church’s insurance matters—always with care and humility. His calm presence and deep love for this congregation will be deeply missed and long remembered. At this time, no memorial plans have been announced, but we will keep the congregation updated as details become available. Let us surround George’s family and loved ones with our prayers, and give thanks to God for the gift of his life. In the promise of resurrection, we trust that George now dwells in the eternal peace and joy of Christ. “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:21 Support One Great Hour of Sharing at St. John’s Presbyterian Church We will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing Offering at St. John's on Palm Sunday, Easter Sunday, and the Sunday after Easter. THE EPISTLE for April 2, 2025 In the Shelter of Their Stewardship Dear Friends in Christ, In recent days, our St. John’s family has bid farewell to two beloved members of our community—Bob Hughes and George Dobbin. These two faithful men quietly shaped the life of our church through their steadfast presence, humble service, and deep love for this congregation. Bob Hughes served behind the scenes, but his care was unmistakable. Week after week, when something in the building needed attention—a leaky pipe, a silent air conditioner, a light that flickered—Bob would appear, quietly and faithfully, to make things right. He didn’t look for recognition; he simply showed up. Again and again. His steady hands kept the gears of ministry turning, and his gentle spirit brought peace wherever he went. As an Elder on Session, Bob served with wisdom and reliability, offering quiet leadership that blessed us all. We hold his beloved wife Mary, along with their children and grandchildren, close in prayer. Bob’s memorial service will be held in our sanctuary on Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 PM. And just yesterday, we received word that George Dobbin had entered the church triumphant. George, too, was a quiet force within our congregation. As chair of the Stewardship and Finance Committee, he offered calm, thoughtful guidance, helping us navigate financial decisions with integrity and care. George also managed the church’s insurance—important, behind-the-scenes work that protected our ministry day after day. Together with his wife Linda, George offered loving leadership to our older adult ministry, until their move to Austin. Plans for a memorial service at St. John’s this summer are underway, and we will share those details once confirmed. Bob and George were not just caretakers of buildings and budgets—they were caretakers of the church’s heart. They looked after this community with quiet devotion, offering their time, skill, and faith without fanfare. And now, we prepare to honor them in the most tender of ways. Both men will be laid to rest in the St. John’s Columbarium, a sacred space on our grounds that holds the stories of those who have loved and served this church. As we grieve their absence, let us also give thanks for their example. Bob and George lived their faith in ways that were tangible and true. They gave of themselves—not to be seen, but to serve. And in doing so, they left behind a legacy of quiet strength and loving stewardship. May their lives inspire us to do likewise. May we find ways to serve with our own gifts—faithfully, humbly, and with joy. “Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your Master.” — Matthew 25:23 With peace and gratitude, Pastor Jon Burnham  === A Service of Witness to the Resurrection In Loving Memory of Bob Hughes Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 PM Sanctuary of St. His life continues to speak, reminding us that the smallest acts of service often leave the greatest legacy. === In Loving Memory of George Dobbin With tender hearts, we share the news of George Dobbin’s passing. “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” — Matthew 25:21  === Men's Group Tonight Wednesday, April 2 at 6:30pm in Session Room We will have a Men’s Group Meeting at 6:30 on Wednesday, April 2, in the Session Room. All men of the church are welcome to participate as we plan upcoming projects.   === An Invitation to “Spring Serenade” — A Concert of Beauty and Renewal St. John’s Lenten Arts Series concludes with this concert this Sunday. You are warmly invited to an afternoon of exquisite music and sacred reflection as part of our Lenten Arts Series at St. John’s Presbyterian Church. On Sunday, April 6, 2025, at 4:00 PM, we will host the gifted musicians of Trio Oriensand special guests for Spring Serenade, a concert celebrating beauty, renewal, and the hope of resurrection. TULIP! A New Sermon Series ... coming soon!
By Jon Burnham March 28, 2025
/image St. John's Presbyterian Worship Bulletin March 30, 2025, Fourth Sunday in Lent Gathering Prelude, Alina Klimaszewska *Call To Worship, The Rev. Dr. Jon Burnham Leader: Seek the treasure of God’s kingdom. People: It surpasses all earthly riches, worth more than gold or silver. Leader: Like a pearl of great price, it calls us to give our all. People: We delight in Your Word, O Lord, our greatest treasure. Leader: Come, let us worship the One whose kingdom is forever. All: With joy and surrender, we praise You, our King! Opening Prayer * God of Compassion, in Mercy Befriend Us, Hymn 436 1 God of compassion, in mercy befriend us, giver of grace for our needs all-availing. Wisdom and strength for each day ever send us, patience untiring and courage unfailing. 2 Though we are lost, you have sought us and found us, stilled our rude hearts with your word of consoling. Wrap now your peace, like a mantle, around us, guarding our thoughts and our passions controlling. 3 How shall we stray, with your hand to direct us, you who the stars in their courses are guiding? What shall we fear, with your power to protect us, we who walk forth in your greatness confiding? Prayer of Confession, Bill Ehrenstrom, Liturgist Merciful God, we confess chasing lesser things—ambition, possessions, or approval—rather than seeking Your kingdom first. Our hearts have been divided, and we’ve neglected the treasure of Your presence. Forgive us, Lord, and renew our desire to value what truly matters. Amen. (Silent Confession) Assurance of Pardon *Glory Be to the Father, Hymn 581 *Passing the Peace The Word Prayer for Illumination First Scripture Reading; Psalm 119:9-16 (Delighting in God’s Law) How can young people keep their way pure? By guarding it according to your word. With my whole heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commandments. I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes. With my lips I declare all the ordinances of your mouth. I delight in the way of your decrees as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts, and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Anthem Sermon Scripture, Matthew 13:44-46 (Parables of the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl) The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. The Word of the Lord for us today. Thanks be to God. Sermon, Parables of the Kingdom. The Rev. Dr. Jon Burnham *My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, 1 and 3, Hymn 803 1 My shepherd will supply my need; Jehovah is his name. In pastures fresh he makes me feed, beside the living stream. He brings my wandering spirit back when I forsake his ways, and leads me, for his mercy's sake, in paths of truth and grace. 3 The sure provisions of my God attend me all my days; O may your house be my abode, and all my work be praise. There would I find a settled rest, while others go and come; no more a stranger, or a guest, but like a child at home. The Apostles Creed, Prayers of the People and Lord’s Prayer Welcome and Announcements Offering *Doxology, Hymn 609 *Prayer after the Offering Sending *Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples, 1, 3 and 4, Hymn 757 1 Today we all are called to be disciples of the Lord, to help to set the captive free, make plowshare out of sword, to feed the hungry, quench their thirst, make love and peace our fast, to serve the poor and homeless first, our ease and comfort last. 3 Pray justice may come rolling down as in a mighty stream, with righteousness in field and town to cleanse us and redeem. For God is longing to restore an earth where conflicts cease, a world that was created for a harmony of peace. 4 May we in service to our God act out the living word, and walk the road the saints have trod till all have seen and heard. As stewards of the earth may we give thanks in one accord to God who calls us all to be disciples of the Lord. *Blessing and Postlude

Exploring the Parables of the Kingdom at St. John's Presbytery Church, Houston Introduction Welcome to St. John's Presbytery Church in Houston, Texas! Located at 5020 W Bellfort Ave, Houston, TX 77035-3204, our church is a vibrant community committed to fostering faith and transformation. We invite you to join us for our upcoming sermon, "Parables of the Kingdom," where we'll explore Matthew 13:44-46 and Psalm 119:9-16, uncovering the incomparable value of God's kingdom. Understanding the Parables In Matthew 13:44-46, Jésus shares two powerful parables: The Hidden Treasure: A man finds a treasure in a field, hides it, and joyfully sells all he has to buy the field, showing the kingdom of heaven's worth. The Pearl of Great Price: A merchant finds a pearl of great value and sells everything to acquire it, emphasizing the sacrifice needed to embrace God's kingdom. These parables teach us to value the kingdom of heaven above all else, a message that resonates deeply with our mission at St. John's Presbytery Church in Houston. Connecting with Psalm 119:9-16 Psalm 119:9-16 complements these parables by highlighting the joy found in God's law: "I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches" (verse 14). This scripture encourages us to delight in God's word, seeking it wholeheartedly, much like the man and merchant in the parables. Application for Our Community In zip code 77035, where many families and single parents reside, this sermon offers hope and direction. It challenges us to prioritize God's kingdom, finding fulfillment in our faith. At St. John's Presbytery Church, we aim to support our Houston community by providing a space to grow spiritually and connect with others. Join Us for the Sermon We hold services every Sunday at 10:00 AM.
