The Power of Words and Silence:
A Lesson for St. John’s Presbyterian Church
By The Rev. Dr Jon Burnham, St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Houston, Texas
Words carry weight. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” At St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Houston, we’re reminded to use words wisely—building bridges, not walls. A harsh word can wound; a kind one can heal.
Yet, in our fast-paced Houston lives, we often speak without thinking, flooding social media with fleeting thoughts. Proverbs 17:27–28 urges restraint: “The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint… Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent.”
Jesus spoke with purpose, His words opening windows to grace, like when He told the woman in John 8:11, “Go, and sin no more.” His silence before Pilate showed strength, not weakness.
Try This: A Word Fast
This week, join us at St. John’s for a Word Fast:
- • Pick a day to speak only when necessary—words of love, truth, or service.
- • Pause before speaking. Ask: Will this build a wall or open a window?
- • Notice the quiet. Hear God’s whisper in the stillness.
Silence isn’t empty—it’s space for God. It cultivates patience, clarity, and compassion, making us a safe place for others in our Houston community.
Prayer
Lord, guide our words at St. John’s. Let them reflect Your love and our silences honor Your presence. Amen.
