A Word from Pastor Jon
Dear friends,
This Sunday, I will be away in Mississippi celebrating the high school graduation of my nephew. Family moments like these remind us how quickly time moves and how important it is to gather for the milestones that shape our lives. I appreciate your prayers for safe travel and for our family during this joyful occasion.
I am also very thankful that the Rev. Valerie Bell will be preaching and leading worship at St. John’s in my absence. Valerie is a retired Presbyterian pastor who lives right here in Meyerland and is part of our St. John’s church family. She brings wisdom, warmth, and many years of faithful ministry experience to the pulpit, and I know you will be blessed by her leadership this Sunday.
One of the quiet strengths of a healthy church is that worship continues with grace and depth no matter who stands in the pulpit on a given Sunday. I encourage you to come worship, sing, pray, and welcome Valerie warmly as we continue our shared life together at St. John’s.
Peace,
Pastor Jon

Retirement Account Income
When to take the RMD and RMDs QCDs Taxes Deductions Penalties
This article is not income tax specific advice. It is intended as general educational material.
Retirement accounts and being a senior may force you to withdraw your Required Minimum Distribution amount, a little cash each year. Your investment company should let you know. But, do not forget an IRA or 401K or a like account.
If you are of the age requiring you to take the RMD, you must do it.
A few things to think about: When do I start with RMD? Search “RMD 2026” for what age you must start taking RMD monies. Call your investment company and discuss this topic. This RMD withdrawn amount is taxable income to you. You can “take” this year’s RMD amounts anytime in 2026.
Do you wish to make a charitable donation of part of the RMD amount? This is a Qualified Charitable Donation, a QCD, and it goes directly to a valid charity at the time you take the RMD. Talk this over with your financial company. Any QCD reduces your taxable income…thus reduces your income tax. Your QCD check amount helps the charity right now. You get less money from the RMD deal.
Many would take part of an RMD as cash income with several QCDs to several charities. If using this method, don’t write a check to your charities. Use the QCD method because you will likely take the standard deduction on your income tax for 2026, plus any other deductions allowed. No need for itemized deductions. This is a different method from itemized deductions to reduce your taxable income.
Taking the charitable part out of the RMD amount means you get less income. The charity gets QCD more income.
Income tax planning for seniors would show income from work, Social Security, investments, and from retirement accounts (RMD amounts). Deductions would include the standard deduction, senior deductions, QCDs to charities, other specific deductions for 2026, etc.
Or, you could plan for itemized deductions rather than the standard deduction if itemizations would be greater than the standard deduction method. Large medical expenses might change your choice of which deduction plan to use.
You must take your RMD amounts each year. When should you take your RMDs? In 2026. Just don’t forget it. Do these RMDs in 2026.
If you are required to take an RMD, and you forget to do that, there is a cash penalty! A penalty can be cleared if you act quickly to ”fix” it. So, take your RMDs in 2026 and don’t earn the late penalty.
It is time to be thinking about your RMDs and perhaps the charitable way to give through the QCD vehicle. Estimate your income and whether you should itemize deductions on the tax return. Or, should you take the standard deduction and try QCDs?
You can look up these rules and suggestions online:
- At what age do RMDs start?
- How much will that be each year?
- What other sources of income?
- See your 2025 tax return for a reminder.
It is time to begin planning for your 2026 Income Tax.
The other half of IRS planning is of course deductions. There are two ways…standard deduction and itemized deductions. Don’t forget the senior deductions and other special “new” deductions. Medical expenses could swing the deduction choice either way.
The RMD and QCD technique is one idea that many seniors use. The timing to begin your plan is right now.
Get help if you need it. Besides, it is fun to work on these figures in a general way, early on.
