Twenty years ago five area churches, Salem Lutheran, St. George Episcopal, St. John's Presbyterian, Westbury Methodist, and Willow Meadows Baptist, banded together to offer assistance to needy people in the area. The result was the founding of Braes Interfaith Ministries (BIM). It began in a room at Willow Meadows with three or four clients who were given groceries. In 1988 a garden was planted near Willow Meadows with the produce going to the food pantry.Today in addition to food the ministry is able offer clothing and employment counseling. Since the ministry began, seven more area churches have joined the original five. In addition to food and monetary donations from members of participating congregations, some of the funding for BIM comes from semi-annual garage sales and a resale shop. Currently grants are being sought to cover the operating expenses for the first year. St. John's is very committed to the ministry of BIM; several of our members donate time and services.
